80% of users search on their smartphones and there is nothing more frustrating than clicking a phone number that doesn’t dial. This is a fast way to frustrate your users, or worse yet, lose them to a competitors website.
The number of users browsing the Internet from their smartphones is increasing every day. Google has officially confirmed that Mobile search has surpassed Desktop search in 2015. Users are constantly on-the-go with instant access to information at their fingertips.
So what does this mobile trend mean for business owners? That if you want to get the attention of your audience, your website should be built and catered to mobile devices.
Which brings us to today’s post, how-to make your phone number clickable in WordPress. WordPress is by far one of the best content management systems (CMS) out there and it is the only CMS I use to build websites. You can read more about WordPress and why should switch here.
You know by now that your phone number should be listed on every page of your website, in addition to other elements like contact hours and phone number. This not only makes it easier for potential customers to get in touch with you but it also keeps them from getting lost in the clutter of the million web pages out there. Keep them focused on your information by making it easily accessible to them.
A clickable phone number is a linked phone number that when users tap on their smartphone, opens up a dialog box to dial. Pretty awesome, right?
Here’s how it’s done.
The following link can be used to make a clickable phone link. Simply copy the code below and paste it into your webpage, then edit with your phone number. This code may not work on all phones (mostly the older styles) but it does work for the top most widely used phones: iPhone, Android and Blackberry.
Phone number links can be used with the dashes, as shown below, or without them as well as in the following example:
The area after the code but before the </a> can be customized to anything you want, for example:
<a href=”tel:1-555-555-5555“>Call Now</a>
<a href=”tel:1-555-555-5555“>(555) 555-5555</a>
<a href=”tel:1-555-555-5555“>Click Here to Dial</a>
Let’s do a real example by using my phone number which you can test right now if you are on your device. Unfortunately, if you are reading this blog post on your desktop, the link won’t do anything. When you call, don’t be shy and say hello or simply hang up, I promise I won’t get offended.
Here is the raw code:
<a href=”tel:16043762804“>(604) 376-2804</a>
Here are the clickable links to call me, give them a try:
